In the Beginning

For thirty years, the Architect lived in the Great Cities of Code, forging worlds for the giants. But in the shadows of the massive towers, he realized that true wonder is lost when the machine grows too large.

Jason Hughes joined the video games industry in 1995. While AAA scale is impressive, the impact one person can have gets smaller every year. He figured the only way to make a game of his own was to return to his roots: small, agile, and independent. So he did, for many years, shipping a few indie titles and helping larger studios when they called.

The Faceless Shadow

One day, a scroll came from a small court far away. They asked for help to build a great new kingdom. And so he went. But a Faceless Shadow sat upon the throne. While the builders toiled, the Shadow squandered the kingdom's gold on folly.

In 2021, a number of talented devs joined a major, well-funded project. Despite raising over $80 million from a dedicated community, the leadership proved incompetent. Unbelievable mismanagement led to the team being fired (despite meeting their obligations), and the project being sent to a cheap studio overseas.

Voice of the People

When the Faceless Shadow threw the builders out, the villagers watched in horror. Unable to let their dream fade away, they gathered what they could spare and offered it to the builders. "We believe in you," they said. And thus began Mooncast.

In 2024, after the team was let go, the community rallied. They raised $365,000 to keep the original vision alive. It wasn't enough to finish an MMO, but it was enough to start Mooncast Productions LLC. A few of the core team agreed to work for half-pay, Jason for no pay at all, to honor that trust.

A Band of Fellows

Five remained. The Architect, the Navigators, and the Shapers. In the quiet of the workshop, they raced against time to create a land of freedom, where any traveler could truly own their treasures without being taxed by kings.

The core team was Angel, Erik, Maxi, Glorymar, and Jason. They built the foundation of an MMO with a unique blockchain integration that just acts as a slow database. It’s not about selling NFTs; it’s about letting you find or craft items in-game and export them to do with as you please, or import them to play with those items. That's how it should always have worked.

The Great Frost

Then came the Great Frost. Across the land, many guild fires went out. The builders had to scatter to survive the harsh winter, leaving the Architect alone in a world of silence and blueprints.

By late 2024, even barely spending, the funding was exhausted. The games industry faced a historic collapse; publishers and VCs stopped funding projects to chase AI. The team had to find other work to make ends meet, leaving Jason to try to carry the project forward alone.

Finding a Soul

In the silence, the Architect realized a world needs more than Machinery; it needs a Soul. He began to write. It took gallons of caffeine. But from his pen flowed 1,500 years of future history, hundreds of characters, and the thirteen domes.

Jason knew all his favorite games told a great story. He wanted to create a world, not just another empty, repetitive activity center. Returning to his creative writing roots, Jason wrote almost a hundred short stories in a narrative arc spanning 1500 years. This lore now dictates the game’s systems, creating a cohesive universe where the environment and the technology make sense together.

The Journey Continues

Today, the legend is no longer a secret. The Book is open, the Podcast will soon carry these voices across the trade winds. Although this journey is just beginning, soon it will be time for the Mooncast Universe to finally wake up.

It is now 2026. Mooncast has evolved from a tech demo into a multi-media intellectual property. With the release of the book and the podcast, we are building the audience and the foundation necessary to eventually realize the full dream of the game. One. Day. At. A Time.
